Yoga Classes for the complete beginner
A review of the yoga classes for the beginner. An overview of classes available in Ennis, Tralee and Limerick.

Yoga is a phrase I grew up with, my mother being highly interested in the subject. Contrary to popular belief I didn’t grow up with yoga mats laid around the sitting room but I was familiar with the positions and the work that went into yoga positions. It became the norm for me to hear about the relaxation and energy gained from frequent classes. I was constantly being advised about the benefits yoga had for relieving stress. Which was why, when I was faced with my final years in college that I decided to enrol in some yoga classes to get my mind and my body into a healthy place.

It’s interesting to know that Yoga has been inexistence since almost 3000 B.C. Archaeological evidence has been found in stone seals that depict pictures of yoga poses. Later on there is an example of Vedas Yoga, stemming from Hindu teachings. These teachings are called Vedic Yoga, whose teachings and ceremonies try to take the body beyond the limitations of the mind. It wasn’t until the 19th Century that Yoga came across Europe into the spotlight of the West. The first elements of Yoga arrived in the 1930’s, however it didn’t become truly popular until the 1960’s. In the 60’s there was an influx of Indian teachers who really expanded on Yoga. It since became the popular exercise regime that many engage in today.

The average Yoga class will begin with meditation for ten minutes, this is to relax your mind and control your breathing, so that your body is loose and relaxed. You will them be gradually led into the yoga exercises by your yoga instructor. The exercises will begin as gradual and not taxing, so to ease your body into them. It is important to remember that when you are performing the poses to control your breathing as well as completing the pose. Breathing in the correct fashion is essential to the benefits gained from yoga. It is also very important to remember not to attempt a position or attempt to hold a position if you are in pain or find it too difficult. Straining your muscles can do your body much more harm than good. The class will move through a variety of different poses, increasing and then decreasing in difficulty, like a triangle. By the time you have reached the end you will once again meditate for ten to fifteen minutes, letting your mind and body relax once again.
