Expand your skill base through an evening course.
In an age of uncertainly about jobs and their future, make sure you have a wealth of skills that will carry you through any tough times. Take an evening class in an area that may enhance your current job skills, or try a new area that may benefit your career in the future.

We are all living in a strange economic climate and nobody can afford to be complacent about their job or the way they earn their living. Many job losses are not as a result of any ineptitude on the part of the employee, but are often down to the overall company and the possible effects of recession on that business. In this world of uncertainty, it is important to look objectively at the skills you possess and decide if there is something more you could do to develop your skill base.

Enhancing your current set of skills is the first thing to think about. What area do you work in? Is there a course you could take to give you additional skills to develop your abilities in your current role? Many people who work in accounts departments decide to take accountancy courses by night in order to formalize their experience and enhance their knowledge and job prospects. Alternatively, you could focus on the type of industry you work in and try to gain a broader knowledge and understanding of this business. This might not be job specific or even directly related to your current role, but if you have a greater all-round understanding of this industry, you are better placed to rotate into other positions should they become available. It can also make you more valuable in a managerial position if you can understand the core business and what others are doing in areas such as production or manufacturing.

The other approach to choosing an evening course is to look at learning different skills to broaden your horizons and enhance your ability to work in a different position should the need arise. Take a look at the range of courses on offer in your area and assess if you have an aptitude or any prior experience of any particular subject. Taking on an evening course for pleasure is easy and fairly relaxed, but if you are trying to gain more than that, then you need to be sure that you will be a suitable candidate and will benefit from the teaching this course has to offer. Look back at other roles or positions you may have held in the past. Perhaps there is something you would like to return to, or an industry that is more prevalent today than when you were previously working in it. Updating your prior experience through an evening course could help you get back on track and open up a different set of opportunities in the future.

The main thing to keep in mind is that knowledge is power. While it might not be something you will use right now, it is surprising to see how very different areas of acquired knowledge can come into play in what you believed was an unrelated job. Take any knowledge offered in an evening course and relate it to your own situation. Decide how you could apply these new skills to your current role or to any future roles you may be interested in. Being open to new ideas and experiences will broaden your overall scope and make you available to new opportunities when they arise.
